Fidel Castro resigns as Cuba’s president

The length of Castro’s rule signifies the longest reign of any head of state in history. Castro served over half a century as Cuba’s president. Castro had long been revered as a communist symbol and an opposer of U.S. Policy worldwide.

The end of his reign allows his brother Raul Castro, to step in and enforce reforms that have been discussed since July 2006.

President Bush announced that he hoped Cuba would begin to move towards a democracy, but the chance of that being slim under the rule of another member of the Castro family. The state denigrated the charge as a “transfer of authority and power from dictator to dictator light.”

“My Wishes have always been to discharge my duties to my last breath,” Castro wrote in a letter published Tuesday in the online edition of the Communist Party daily Granma. But “it would be a betrayal to my conscience to accept a responsiblity requiring more mobility and dedication than I am physically able to offer.”

Talks of Proxy Battle between Microsoft and Yahoo emerge

Microsoft Corp. will engage in a proxy fight for Yahoo Inc. this week to convince the Web party’s shareholders to concur on a coup trade that the Yahoo panel so far has rejected, the New York Times’ DealBook blog said on Tuesday.

Quoting folk briefed on the issue, the Times Web place said that Microsoft, which has been expected to increase its cash-and-stock offer earlier valued at $44. 6 billion, would try to appoint a slate of directors by March 13, if Yahoo’s panel did not participate in talks.

A Microsoft spokesman said the party has ever-maintained it reserves the right to exert all options but declined to note specifically what those options would be.

“Microsoft is doing the smart thing. It’s giving both the carrot and the stick,” said Morningstar analyst Toan Tran. “The carrot was the big premium on Yahoo stock and now the stick is the threat of a proxy fight.”

Bill Gates’ outlook on the situation remains optimistic.

Martha Stewart Acquires Emeril For $50 million

NEW YORK – Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Inc. just acquired a new celebrity, chef Emeril Lagasse.

Stewart’s New York-based entity announced on Tuesday that it had just bought the rights to Emeril Lagasse’s cookbooks, television shows, and kitchen products for $50 million, cash and stock.

Martha Stewart announced the deal would be supplemental to the company’s performance. Lagasse’s portfolio generated $14 million in revenue in 2007.

In the 15 years Lagasse spent in the food network, he hosted over 1,600 shows, reaching almost 90 million homes daily.
